First time visiting Japan? Or visiting for the second time and looking to make your trip this time a little bit easier? It is already hard for travelers to go explore in a strange country. Things are quite different from home – there are some similarities, but usually there would be glaring differences. Things that may seem normal to you would not automatically mean it is normal for people of another nationality.
There are cultural differences, lifestyle differences, and even a difference in communication – specifically the language. In Japan, they have a system established that you would not probably find in your own country. It becomes a bit harder if you could not communicate with other people. So here are some tips to help you have an easier time in Japan, and hopefully, for you to not get lost while exploring this beautiful country.
Always remember to have a map everywhere you go. It is not that difficult to obtain a map when you land in Japan. There are several stands that you’ll encounter on the way out of the airport providing different maps, different travel guides, and other tourist information that could prove useful when you’re in Japan. If you don’t find any of those, you could always proceed to a tourist information office – you could usually find them in airports and train stations. As trains are an important part of commuting in Japan, it is very important for you to get a train/subway map, so you would be able to plan your itinerary better. Another thing you should also get is a guide book of the city; these guides usually provide you tourist attractions, how to go there, and other important information.
Having access to the internet wherever you go is very useful while you’re in Japan! While Japan does provide access to the internet in various public places, it is still better to have one of your own, especially if you need to look up information that you do not have on hand. You can rent these mobile Wi-Fi devices when you arrive at the airport, there are usually stores that let you rent a Wi-Fi device and sometimes, even cellphones. There are also times when accommodations, specifically Airbnb rentals, provide the guests a mobile Wi-Fi, make sure to check with your host.
Learn some Japanese, especially basic ones that you think you’ll be needing such as thank you, good morning, and sorry. Learning questions such as “How much is this?” and “Where is the restroom?” is also very useful. Another you should take note of is that the Japanese are very respectful, and gives importance to manners and etiquette; and so, make sure to check on the do’s and don’ts, so that you would not unnecessarily defend anyone – especially the locals.
If you are unsure of how to start exploring Japan, you could always take a guided tour! Almost always, there are tours you could avail of when visiting a tourist attraction. Those who provide tours are usually easy to find, you could almost always find them just nearby the tourist attraction you’re visiting. So if you are afraid to get lost or wanting to learn some more about the place you are visiting, then it is recommended for you to take a guided tour!
Lastly, do not forget to have fun! Explore Japan with an open mind and an open heart. Whether you get lost or you get tired, make each experience and exploration fun and enjoyable for you. There are always things to discover in the streets of Japan, even if you’re not trying to look. Remember, the best way to explore the country is to have fun!
